Vitamin D Miracle Reduces Risk Of Melanoma Return
Professor Julia Newton-Bishop and her team from the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine, St James's University Hospital, Leeds set out to test their hypothesis that higher levels of vitamin D reduce risks of the return of melanoma. They analysed 872 patients who were diagnosed with melanoma and watched how they progressed through their treatment. The patients who had higher levels of vitamin D were less likely to have the disease reoccur. Those that had low levels were more likely to have a re-occurrence of melanoma. This is very good news for those who enjoy a Mediterranean diet, high in oily fish! Scroll at the bottom of the article for source (reference 1).
I have included an information picture on melanoma for you to look at. This is to help people identify and learn as to what to look out for with this disease. Vitamin D: Research Evidence For Bowel Cancer
So what about people who develop bowel cancer? What are the implications for them? The Dana Faber Cancer Institute, based in the U.S.A., took 1,017 patients diagnosed with bowel cancer and asked them to complete a questionnaire on sun exposure, diet and supplements. Although, the aim of the study was not specific to vitamin D, they found a link here too. From this information, the Researchers managed to ascertain vitamin D levels in their blood by the patient’s responses. Again, they found that those with higher levels of this vitamin D were less likely to die from bowel cancer than those with lower levels. As a result of this study, it has now instigated further research. Scroll at the bottom of the article for source (reference 3).

Vitamin D Taken In Excess Has Side Effects
As with anything that you are unsure about, it is always best to check with a health care professional, specialist in the field for which is appropriate to your needs. For example, if you have been diagnosed with bowel cancer or melanoma, speak to your oncologist for more information.
All supplements and medication has to be assessed so as it doesn’t conflict with treatment. Extra vitamin D in any format should be questioned for your well-being. Vitamin D taken in excess, for example, can increase calcium levels in the blood. This can result in nausea, thirst, excessive urination, vomiting, dizziness and headaches. Scroll at the bottom of the article for source (reference 5) then further scroll down to ‘Are There Any Side-Effects From Vitamin D Supplements?’
Although a blood test can identify whether there are excessive calcium levels in the blood, it is better to consult a Doctor and check first than result in problems based on a couple of research articles.

Vitamin D Miracle Hits Bowel Cancer & Melanoma
However it is, initially, looking good for vitamin D, bowel cancer and melanoma. As I have suspected a good healthy Mediterranean diet seems to be the most appropriate diet to keep us fit. I have always believed in moderation in everything, including sunlight, and it seems fitting that sources of vitamin D can be so good for us.

Always a thumbs up Shaz. I've been reading more and more about the merits of Vitamin D (including taking in a bit of sunshine) but you've outlined some new reasons to make sure one doesn't get D- deficient. I believe it becomes more prevalent in older adults. Thanks!..but the photos (except for the lovely bum) were difficult..i'm a sissy. :(
Hi Shaz! Okay so I admit I had to scroll quickly over the graphic pics but other than that minor but very needed detail it was a great hub. Never underestimate the power of D, huh? Good job!!!!
Shaze, I had a blood test a couple of years ago and was low on Vitamin D, so I've been taking it ever since. Great hub.
Good information to share. :)
Well done, an easy to read hub with good information
Very, very interesting. I've found a lot of good information here, and some of them I didn't know. Very well done shaz, rated obviously up. :)
Wow, I did not know that Vitamin D help to fight against colon cancer. That's great to know. Within the last year since there has been so much talk about Vitamin D,I've added it to my vitamin regimen. Thanks for sharing your insight. Thumbs up! :)
Fantastic hub as usual Shaz! We are very aware of sun damage in Australia and we know just how bad sun damage can be. However, sensible people get just enough vitamin D from the sun and supplement this with fish oil tablets or eating oily fish. Thanks for all the great info.
thumbs up again! Maita
Important information here. Well written and illustrated.
Great article about Vitamin D. My husband and I started taking it last year when we found out that it can protect you against the flu. Last year we didn't get one cold or the flu. So very thankful because we had the flu the year before, and it was bad. Neither one of us like to take flu shots.
