Aerobics - Water!
Senior Solutions To Aging
It’s not so funny when you have cranky bones and stiff muscles. Every movement for some has to be planned. There may also be extensive use of apparatus and using the world around you to help you get about. What is this? This is about empowerment or senior solutions to movement problems. This can be what it is to be an older or elderly person.
I volunteer for the Ambulance Service. Many of my patients live in the middle of nowhere and it can be up to 40 miles to the main hospital. Of course, as people get older, they are more inclined to need hospital services to assess, plan, implement and evaluate their health care need. It is often said to me, after an appointment, “Arrh, well, it is wear and tear, you know!” Yes, wear and tear can lead to pain and restricted mobility.

Promoting Elderly Health
Seniors Health: They Can't Take Their Bodies For Granted Like Us Youngens!
As people get older, their bodies and cells of the body, don’t regenerate to the same standard as previously was – this helps with the aging process. However, I am not going to get into the why’s and wherefores! The fact is that, as we age, our body degenerate - seniors health can't be taken for granted!
As younger people, we take our bodies for granted. We can exercise to our hearts content, rush here and rush there without much thought of aches and pains. However, as time goes on, we start to see changes in our bodies. We can’t do as much as we used to, but our minds are always the same – all things being equal, of course!
We all know that exercise is good for us, but what if we can’t move that well? What if you have arthritis, for example? I am focusing on this condition because it is particularly debilitating and painful. The exercises suggested in this hub are also great for anyone in their twilight years.

Weight Loss With Exercise!
The trouble with pain is that the more pain you gain, the less exercise you want to do. The less exercise that is achieved, the easier it is to gain weight and, with this as an addition, the more pain you gain. It is a double-edged sword! Some people would say it is a no win situation. Extra weight means more pressure on your joints, back, knees, feet, ankles and hips. But is it possible to have the right exercise routine for elderly people?
Finding the right exercise for the individual can reverse this ever-decreasing cycle. This is about the right regime! It will help to manage arthritis and many other ailments that older people get.

Senior Fitness Programs - Always Check With A Doctor or Physiotherapist first
Tips in Healthy Aging: Elderly Health - Know Your Limitations!
The NHS recommends light to moderate exercise 30 minutes a day and aerobic exercise (enough to be breathing deeply and produce a glow to the skin) for 20 minutes, two to three times a week, if possible. This is hard on people in pain, but with the right routine, it can be managed and achieved!
The key for anyone who has arthritis, or any condition that afflicts mainly older or infirm people, is know your limitations.
- Don’t Overdo It – Build up to fitness. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so slowly does it!
- Expect Some Discomfort At First – You will find parts that you didn’t know existed! Over time, it gets better. If your body is telling you, you are doing too much – you probably are! Heed its warning! For example, if you feel pain in the joint, then this particular exercise is not right for you, so don’t continue with it.
- Always Check With A Doctor or Physiotherapist first – they can help advise you with tips to overcome problem areas and tell you whether it is safe for you.
- Watch out for feeling tired over a sustained period of time, increased joint swelling with continued pain and reduced range of movement. These are signs that you might need to be monitored by a specialist in this field and that you might be overdoing exercise.
- Try and exercise when you are in not so much pain – after medication, for example, or after rest – keep a good posture. Exercise helps achieve a good posture and body awareness will help conditions like arthritis in the long run. This is about minimising pain.

Maintaining Cardiovascular Fitness: Aerobics - Water Helps to Alleviate Body Stress Whilst Exercising
Swimming, aqua swim or just walking in the swimming pool is a good exercise. The water keeps people buoyant and alleviates stress on the body whilst exercising. Even during a flare up of arthritis exercises, like water activities, it is important to keep up. Swelling and stiffness can worsen during these flare up periods, so it is advisable to listen to your body and minimise the more strenuous activities. Again, the key here is listen to your body! When the flare up subsides, you can then build up again. In the following video there is some great practical advice in the area of aqua aerobics. I hope you will find this helpful.

I've been giving a lot of thought to exercise for the elderly lately--your hub is very timely. My parents are elderly and exercise is particularly challenging for my father, who will be 91 next month. My mother is 81 and walks at the gym every day. I've been trying to talk her into a senior water aerobics class at the gym, but haven't succeeded yet.
I've been in a water aerobics class since last fall, and I've loved it. It truly is a stress free way to get exercise. (I'm not in the seniors class, though....)
Thanks for sharing this information, Shaz.
Mike
Shazwellyn,
Thumbs up for you!
Perhaps you've got to be 60 like me to really feel the urgency and importance of regular exercise.
I do qigong and yoga regularly, apart from my gardening chores.
Having to care for my 5-year granddaughter full time, is reason enough for me to be healthy and keep healthy.
Hi Shazwellyn!! :)
I recently hurt my hip and lower back when I slipped on some in my driveway..At physical therapy they had me do some of this water exercise to help take the weight off my hip..It worked very well!
Great hub and info for everyone...not only seniors! :)
Stormy....
Terrific Hub shaz. My Mom loves water aerobics since it's so easy on the knees. I also like the nice little video on Balance and Exercise. Who says you can't exercise with your hat on!? I do hope when I'm that age, I can still do Yoga rather than play Wii:)
This is a very useful Hub. Seniors need to be active and exercises in your Hub will also reduce Athritis.
Talking about seniors - Piers Morgans interviewed Bruce Forsythe Sat 20 March. (He's in his 80s and still very active)
Great Hub.
Best Wishes xx.
Hey Shaz! I may not be a senior yet but this looks really good and helpful! Thanks for looking out for the health of hubbers!
This is a really good hub and a reminder to everyone to keep active for as long as possible. I care for people who can no longer excercise on their own and sometimes need passive exercise from us to help relax and loosen up their limbs. It really does help to keep supple because once you've lost that ability it becomes very hard to keep a wide range of movements. Also, exercise helps to keep dementia at bay. Well done on a great hub shazwellyn
You did an awesome job on this hub, you seemed to have covered a wide array of solutions for seniors to stay active, right down to the Wii.
Although, I am not a senior, I have always enjoyed water aerobics.
Great Job, Good Luck! Rated Up!
Sage
Great hub! Exercise can really make a difference, especially for seniors, so, even if they have to surpass various limitations, such as the pain caused by arthritis, they still need to exercise.
Another great exercise for people suffering from arthritis is riding the GlideCycle. That allows you to walk/ run at a fraction of your body weight without putting stress on your joints and ligaments. It's really cool!
Great Hub, this reminds me of when I worked with senior citizens when I was just out of high school. It's amazing those that have kept fit really can give you a run for your money, believe it or not. Those where some fun times. Thanks for sharing your insight and congratulations on being selected in this week's contest. :)
Great hub and I can deff recommend the Wii Fit Plus and swimming ; )
Exercise is very important no matter at what are you are in.. It brings activeness and new lease to life.. you have given some great tips for old age exercise to stay fit.. good work!
What a nice hub. I'm in my late fifties, and I'm always out there walking. I must confess a dislike for resistance exercises, though (my bad!).
I enjoyed reading this.
I like this Hub. My kind of exercise regime. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent hub for the Silver Surfers out there. Well done.
Amber:)
Great work. It shows it is never too late to look after yourself :)
Refreshing and excellent information! Thank you! I was active for a lifetime and got wrapped up in my business so much that I stopped getting any exercise except to walk the dog for these last 4 years. What a mistake THAT was! I am 50 and just decided to start back again with an exercise program, & healthy eating. Boy, there is no substitute for exercise! Even if you walk 3 times a week on the local school track - You won't be sorry. Fit it in your schedule, find a way, somehow! Thanks! Great Hub!
Definitely. Exercise is the clue to staying young. My girls always tell me that "I don't play because I am old...but I get old when I don't play".
I am almost 50 and many of my peers say that I look in my 30's. Diet and exercise has been my secret.
Also studies have clearly shown that exercise is crucial in preventing alzheimer's disease.
i know for a fact when i get older i am definietly going to do exercise, as it will keep myself busy and i will have a hobbie and i can socialize.

Many seniors do need some different type of exercise especially with arthritis. Swimming is great for them. This is a very well written hub. Thumbs up!
