Online Creative Writing and SEO

Online creative writing and marketing it on the Internet is the most difficult to get read for the Internet writer. In terms of SEO (search engine optimization), the problem doesn't occur in getting your keyword or phrase to the number 1 position, but who will actually be searching for this. The core problem is getting that traffic and not the relevant keyword or phrase. That doesn't mean to say that this is not important, because it is. It is the choice of this that can limit traffic or increase it.

In this article I will provide more seo tips to help the Internet writer who specialises in online creative writing and wants to - simply - get their work out there and read! This is the second part of my series of articles on this subject - more useful tips to SEO can be viewed in the resource box at the end of this article.

As an Internet writer who specialises in all things creative - i.e. stories, poems and prose - you might marvel at how clever you are at getting number one position on Google's search engine. This was achieved with very little effort on your part and, quite rightly, you just might feel a little smug that you have achieved the impossible dream. This gives you licence to celebrate!

Don't! I hate to burst your bubble, but who on this earth is searching for 'Ollie - The Big Red Bus', anyway? As an Internet writer, myself, Ollie is one of my stories and, as an unknown, kudos for hitting number 1 on SERPs (search engine rank position)  is rather a lot of hot air! No one is actively searching this keyword, so don't pop open the champagne just yet!

So, now that I have deflated that ego balloon, let us get down to the nitty gritty and get that work out there!

Decent keyword research might help get your work read and generate a bit of traffic. It might even earn you some money if you play your cards right!

Be warned, however, online creative writing is the most difficult form of content to get read, simply because story titles are more than just niche - the only person searching for it would be people who already know the title in the first place! Great, if you are already an established writer, like Stephen King, for example. People would be actively searching 'King Christine Car' and search engines will easily be able to pick these keywords up and connect the right search result with the right keywords!

For this reason, it is important to emphasise the power of tags, meta - descriptions, meta-titles, matching URL's, keywords, content and on-page optimization. As I have mentioned already previously, I cover these issues in my previous article - you will find links for these at the end of this article.

Tags, however, tell the search engines what your content is about. The Stephen King example would suggest that his tags, of around 20, describes his content effectively and well. For example: stephen king, christine car, horror, novel, story, book, etc. These words are what searchers will be looking for in order to get access to Stephen King's content.

Unfortunately, most Internet writers are not famous like Stephen King, so we have to think of clever little ways to get traffic. We have to work harder at seo.

I will go back to my Ollie example. So, who will be searching for my type of story? How will I find the optimum keyword or phrase that encompasses Ollie - The Big Red Bus? Now here I could use Google's wonder wheel to help.

Google's wonder wheel is a suggestion tool that relates to different but similiar terms. It can help you with getting good keywords and tags. It looks like a series of inter-related webs which you can click on and gather information for your related topic. Ollie is a children's story.

You can search for 'children's stories' and access wonder wheel by turning 'Instant Off'. Go to 'More Search Tools', then click on 'Wonder Wheel'. This is important which is why I have highlighted it.

Now you can see how useful Google's wonder wheel is as a tool.  But how do we use this to help our stories as regards to seo?

As you saw with my term 'Children's stories', this can be typed into the wonder wheel and I get a list of related terms - 'children's stories'. Take a look at the picture.

As you will see, this now opens up more choice for your keyword or phrase ideas. My Ollie stories relate, incidentally, to bedtime stories. I can now click on this and see what other suggestions that I can use. This tool is infinite and you can keep clicking to find your niche term. This is what you will end up with as part of your title for your online creative writing - the ultimate term!

Not only this, but you can use these as tags to describe your content. My Ollie stories is a 'children's story', a 'bedtime story', 'pre-schooler stories' ect. These terms, therefore, provide me with more choices.  Another useful tool is theasurus - remember what we were taught at school?  The Thesaurus is brilliant to give us alternative words to our keywords.

What if you want to monetise your online creative writing? Well, you will need to choose your key phrase carefully and hold an adsense account.  You will need to apply for this so as adwords can appear on your web page.

If you look at the picture above, you will see a string of information on the results page. I have termed this is the box 'What's This?'. It shows the PageRank of articles and directories. If you want to monetise your term, or, indeed get your writing read, you need to look for terms that are low in PR. This is the secret to getting your chosen term on the front page of Google. Places like Hubpages don't have to be too worried about this because they already command a high PR. This is a kick start.

To get this information tool, you will need to download firefox and it's extension, called SeoQuake. You will find a link for this at the bottom of this article.

Now you might have a good idea for a decent keyword, why not use the keyword tool from Adwords to help you with gaining that traffic?

This tool will give you a good idea as to how many people search for that term. This is the key to driving your traffic to your online creative writing material and is essential if you want to be a successful creative Internet writer. People will be searching not for 'Ollie The Big Red Bus' but Bedtime Stories followed by Ollie The Big Red Bus.

I want to add, that if you want to find out the value of your keywords, then you will need to tick 'Estimated Avg. CPC'. You will find this option by clicking 'columns'. This will give you information as to the amount of people that searches for that term and how much the average click you might get if you choose to build in Adsense to your web page.

We are nearly at the end of this article. As you can see, the importance of tags, keywords and phrases is paramount if you want to get your online creative writing off the ground. These are essential tactics that an online writer needs to know so as they can get their work read. Whether they monetize their art or just want to have the joy of writing for the world to love is neither here or there. You still need traffic or what is the point in putting finger to keyboard or pen to paper?
