So you want to publish a book? Well, here are few best book writing tips that preceeds this first step. In this article I will also try and guide you into how to get a book published. Although, this is not easy – forewarned is forearmed – it isn’t impossible.

Apart from having raw talent, you need to have connections and a belief that you can convince a publisher or agent to publish your book.

Before you start you need to make a plot plan for your story or book. Making a plot plan, otherwise known as a story outline, for your book is an important first step. This will provide direction and focus to your writing.

You need to create sections (for example, four chapters to a section, four sections to the book) and write personality profiles for your characters. It is important for your characters to have individuality that is unique to themselves. This means they must not appear wooden, but must be human for which your target market can identify with.

Now, with lots of things in life, there are certain rules that are traditional in book writing. So, how do you tell the story? This book writing tip recommends that the author should do this in one of three ways:

1. Through the eyes of each of the main characters
2. Through the eyes of the main character or hero - the first person
3. As a third party, i.e. God's eye view
   

The first option is about giving different perspectives or angles of different characters. This is possibly the most difficult form of story writing and for someone who first starts out would be best avoided.

The second option is telling the story as if you are recounting an incident in your life to a friend. You are doing the story telling here.

The third option is as if the writer is an impartial witness looking on and telling a tale.

When writing any type of book an understanding of your market is important. Read as many modern books and stories in your chosen field that you can lay your hands on.

It is of no use reading Oliver Twist and emulating the style of Charles Dickens as this might not be the type of literature that your modern readership will want to read for pleasure.

The Harry Potter books, for example, are more the modern style. However, try and keep your content more unique and original, but find your own angle on a theme.

Okay, now this section is about how to get a book published. However, it is also about being realistic, so excuse the cynicism.

Now you have proudly written your epic masterpiece. You have spent weeks and months hammering out your tale, sweating blood and burning the midnight oil. There it is before you, sitting on its desk in all its glory, awaiting the eager publisher, to turn it into a million book sales sensation. Oh, if only life were like that! You think that writing the book was hard but, boy, you ain’t seen nothing yet!

Take you coveted manuscript to a well-known publisher. You expected them to fall over themselves in their excitement, to get it on their presses. WRONG!

“ Who are you? … What books have been published?” “Well, err, none yet.” You reply and hardly believing that they can be so silly. “We only deal through agents… We never deal directly through authors until the book has been accepted.”

Now deeply disappointed, you take up your work of art and, sadly, try and find another agent.

Your list of agents is not long, but you first go to the largest and best known. “Would you be my agent and submit this manuscript?” You ask hopefully. “We don’t accept unpublished authors.” Is the reply. This seems to be the same question and response to all the local agents. After all, why should they take a chance, risking their money and reputation on a new and unproven individual?

Now try smaller publishers and agents. You might even get one or two to actually read your synopses and first chapter if you are lucky. You might even get published!

You may have thought that, at last, your worries are at an end. You dream of book signing days at big city bookshops, t.v. interviews, fame and, most certainly, fortune. Forget it. You haven’t even started.

The editor will read your book and, when he has, out comes the red pen. This can go on and on. Rewrite chapter nine. Change the ending. Explain what character John is doing in a given situation. You may end up nearly having to re-write the whole book. When it does, finally, emerge on the bookshelves – it stays there, until you see it in a ‘remainder’ bookshop going for 50p.

If you find that no publisher or agent will take you, there is always the self-publishing route. You can employ someone who is a retired editor, for example, to go through the work with you. This allows you to hone the work to its final shape.

When this has been completed, take it to a printer who will run off a number of copies (for example, a thousand). These will need to be taken to bookshops where you will need to attempt to sell them, perhaps on a sale or return basis. You could try and sell them at book fairs or similar.

There is one last way of getting published. This is through a vanity publisher. These are printers who will produce your book for a price. Be warned this could be costly. The editor might tell you that your work is wonderful – no matter how poor it really is – but, at least, a number of books will duly arrive. This will be exactly as you have written it and then you will have to sell them as best you can.

Well, there you are - book writing tips that should help you with success in your writing techniques.  Yes, there was a reality check in your learning in how to get a book published but, although it was marked with cynicisms, it should prepare you for a lot of hard work.  However, I would suggest that if you are serious about your focus on book publishing - don't be put off.  Know the realities and keep plugging away.  Try and enlist as much help as you can with the soul aim of finding ways to publish your book.  If you throw enough mud on the wall, some of it is bound to stick, so don't give up!  As you might see from my next article, I very nearly did make it, so it is possible.  Take a look now and good luck!
