Everyone could set their clocks by Ollie!
Ollie the big red bus, rolled along the town's main street, it's fat black tyres shushing along the road. Every day at eight o'clock, Ollie stopped beside the round bus-stop outside the shops, and purred with pleasure as people climbed into his wide body.
The sun twinkled off the clean windows of the upper deck, and sparkled off Ollie's bright red paint.
When the passengers were comfortably settled into the deep seats, Bill the conductor rang the bell and Ollie rolled into the middle of the road, winking his amber lights to tell all the other vehicles that he was starting his journey.
As Ollie travelled through the town, pretty girls got on laughing and chatting on their way to work. At one stop, where lots of houses stood in neat rows, children all dressed in school uniform climbed aboard. They were making lots of noise running up the stairs on to the upper deck, so that they could watch the town pass by on their way to school.
Ollie was a happy bus; every day he did what he liked doing best, taking people to wherever they wanted to go. Every day he called at the bus-stops around the town, always at the same time, never ever late.
"Here comes the nine o'clock bus," says the little old lady waving a walking stick.
"Here comes the ten o'clock bus," shouts the mother holding her two children by the hand.
"Here comes the eleven o'clock bus", calls the young man, holding his umbrella in the air, and Bill the conductor, reminded the passengers that Ollie was the 'clock-bus,' because everyone in the town could set their clocks by him.

The yellow bus was faster....
Every evening when Ollie trundled back to the garage, Sam the cleaning man would wash and scrub all the day's dirt off. Ollie's bright red paint sparkled and was made nice and clean again. Molly the cleaning lady, Sam's special friend, would brush all the seats, and make Ollie's inside spic and span.
One day as Ollie waited by the shops, a new bus pulled up beside him. It was less half than Ollie's size, and painted a bright yellow, with a snooty look on it's face, as if it's thought itself far better than Ollie. Before Ollie could even say hello, the little yellow bus darted around him, and with a wiggle of it's exhaust pipe, disappear amongst the cars and lorries driving by.
Not so many people got on Ollie that day, because the little yellow bus was faster, and the people didn't have to pay so to much ride on her. This made Ollie very sad. because he liked to travel with lots of people sitting inside his wide body.
That night, as Ollie stood in the big garage with all the other red buses, he asked them if they had seen the new little yellow bus.
"Yes i have!" said Basil, as he stood beside his old trusted friend. "It kept getting in front of me and taking all my passengers, it really shouldn't be allowed."
"I agree, it's not fair," said Leonard the express bus, standing in the corner.
"And me" cried a voice from the back of the garage, and all the other buses chorused their agreement. Big tears dropped from Ollie's two big front head-lamps, splashing on to the cold concrete floor.

He had a heavy heart ....
His silver radiator drooped down in sorrow, because he really thought the people of the town liked the little yellow bus, a lot more than his friends.
The next day Ollie felt big and lumpy, his red paint had lost it's shine, and his big black tyres felt flat. The sky was grey when Ollie left the garage, large drops of rain fell on to his roof, making long dirty streaks run all down his metal body.
Only a few people got on that morning, and they, huddled down into the seats, leaving dirty pools of water on his floor. There weren't many children upstairs, and the few that were there sat quiet and still. It was cold and wet all day, and Ollie felt very miserable.
Later that day, after two trips around the town, Ollie suddenly sneezed; his front lights bounced up and down, his windows shook and doors rattled. Ollie coughed, leaving a smudge of black smoke trailing behind him. He coughed again, much louder this time and Ollie shuddered to a standstill.
Bill ran round the bus to Fred the driver, and both peered under Ollie's bonnet at the engine, but no matter what they tried, they couldn't get poor Ollie started. He just stood in the middle of the road weeping a spreading puddle of black oil. Ollie felt so lost and ashamed watching Basil take his passengers away.
The breakdown lorry came and roughly towed a very dejected Ollie back to the garage for repair.
It was with a heavy heart that Ollie allowed the repair man to tinker inside his engine. The rest of the day and all through the evening, Ollie was taken pieces and put back together again; no matter what the man did, Ollie just would not start. That evening Basil stood beside him, doing his best to mend Ollie's poor broken heart, and they sadly talked right through the night.
As the first rays of the sun peeped through the garage window, Ollie felt a little better as he watched all the other buses roll out into the new day. He made up his mind to try again, he squared up his radiator, focused his head-lamps and tightened his diesel cap.

Fred sat in the driving seat, Bill jumped onto the platform. Fred pushed the starter and with a splutter, Ollie's engine roared into life. Ting went the bell, and Ollie rolled out of the garage, and down the road towards the bus stop outside the shops.
There was a queue outside the bus-stop, and lots of people scrambled onto Ollie's seats, laughing and joking.
"We are glad to travel in your bus" they said to Bill. " That new yellow bus shakes and rattles, and we have nowhere to put our shopping."
Ollie's headlights shone with pleasure, as he trundled into the morning traffic, his bright orange winkers telling all the people that the clock bus was back, and here to stay.
