We have already established that the SEO geek can go into mental melt-down with the process of search engine optimisation. So, what chance has us, mere mortals, got of keeping our sanity? With the addition of competing with informational web pages, how do you get your story or poem optimized?

What we are dealing with here, therefore, is harder than any other forms of writing. It is, therefore, optimizing search engines that many creative writers struggle with on the internet.

Learning how to optimize search engines is a skill that has to be learned with practice, experience and tutoring. Whether this is through formal means or by trial and error, it is complicated and unnatural.

Creative writing, online or otherwise, is something that feels like a force that flows to many writers. Therefore, by using the process of SEO by using keywords, tags, metadescriptions, on-page optmization and backlinking, can feel strange to those who write stories and poems. First thing is first:

Marketing is the keyword here.  Whether you have a product, information or artistic offering, it is all 10% creation and 90% promotion.  Search engine optimization is part of the promotional phase and will help to get your work read.

Firstly, you will need to think about how you can optimize your page.  This is called on-page optimization and, in the resource box of this article, I have a link to my article about this for you to click on to learn more.  Think of this as a set of rules to package your piece of creative writing.

Keywords are an important component in SEO. But how do you use a sprinking of keywords in online creative writing throughout your story or poem?

These keywords are the most difficult and unnatural to integrate when writing creatively. However, there are clever ways and means to get around this - remember that you want to get your work read! For example no one is going to be actively searching for a story called 'Ollie The Big Red Bus Falls In Love', but they might be searching for 'Free Bedtime Stories For Children :: Ollie The Big Red Bus Falls In Love'.

So, now you have the keyword or phrase that you can build around the story.  You can do this by placing this key phrase at the beginning of an introduction to your story.  This forms part of your 'metadescriptions'.  See an example of metadescriptions in the following picture.

Now you understand the importance of keywords and phrases in helping to get your work listed on SERPs, you can see that it is possible to package this around your online creative writing.

In the following example, you will see how you can create this package by using the first paragraph to describe that your content is a story and what type of story or poem - for example, free online story, imaginative story or children's story. This is a way to target the audience. You can also use your tags in the same way. Take a look at the pictures to understand my meaning here.

As you can see from the above picture, I have highlighted from my own story example:

1. In the key phrase, I have ensured that 'Free Bedtime Stories For Children' appears in the URL and the meta-description (in the first paragraph).
2. Through the content of the introduction paragraph, end paragraph and tags, I have sent out a definite message that this is a story and the type of story.
3. Through Embolding, I have emphasized the importance of these words.  This gives a clear message that the content is targeted towards children, bedtime, stories, reading.
4. Through being clear to Google as to where I am targeting my story, Adsense has optimized the advertising to target my audience - ie. children, writing.

Through packaging my story, I have not lost the creative stance.  Scattering keywords and phrases have not penetrated my story, therefore, leaving it open to enjoy.

So, now you have packaged and optimized your story for the best possible chance of getting a good search engine page ranking, what next?  Well this is where you need to develop back links.  It is here that you are creating scaffolding for your package and, just like any other form of writing, is necessary if you want your masterpiece to be read.

Social networking sites, like Facebook, Myspace, Stumbleupon and Xomba are nofollow. This means that it doesn't have any value in terms of search engine optimization. However, if you want your creative writing read online, it is advisable to get your work linked up with them.

Twitter is also a good medium for promoting your online writing. Build a fan base and keep them updated. Remember, you are only as good as the last piece of writing, so keep up good standards and get interactive!

I have always enjoyed Redgage and have earned a reasonable amount of money there. It generates traffic, has some SEO value and is the real deal.
