You would if you were the owner of these accounts. You would if your articles generated a passive income. You would if you had spent several months building and lovingly nurturing 130 plus articles.
So, what's the story? Why did this happen? Read on for a thought provoking theory and remember the answer to how to seo comes from you! If you are reading this, it is by default. This is your journey too!
How To SEO or How Not To SEO, This Is The Question!
An Ingenuious Experiment
I have been involved in an experiment with a team of people named the 60 day challenge organised by the brilliant SEO Guru - Sunforged. This has been an amazing learning experience and a very successful project. Although not the sort of outcome that I would have expected, none-the-less, no one can dispute the invaluable experience and expertise that we have all gained from the experiment. Let me take this opportunity to thank Sunforged and the team for this. We are all pioneers and have achieved so much from this.
If you would like to learn more from my log about New Marketing Strategies please click on the link. This article will provide you with a diary type log leading up to the recent sequence of events. As you will see, there were some amazing milestones achieved that came from team effort. It is here that I would like to say a special 'thank you' to Edweirdo whom has helped and taught me how to seo. This is mainly by giving me 'extra curricula' beyond the realms of the 60 day challenge team - search engine optimization without the fluff! Please feel free to check out his articles.
What Did We Do?
After the initial 30 day phase, which I have highlighted on my New Marketing Strategies diary type article, the team learned and created blogs at Blogger and RSS feeds of our articles. These articles were grouped as to our personal interests and likings. We started to blog these. None of us felt that it caused harm because the blogs were what we were personally interested in, full of good content and original.
It wasn't until a fellow team member alerted me to my deleted blogs, that alarm bells started to ring. I checked googlemail, adsense and analytics to find that they were all disabled. All things google had been suspended. I was devastated and distraught. It was a terrible sickly experience! Something I wouldn't want anyone to go through. Please heed this warning and learn by my suffering!
The Experiment
Google Mail Got Disabled... Why?
Email from Google:
Hello,
Your blog at Bladelabla.com
has been reviewed and confirmed as in violation of our Terms of Service for:
SPAM. In accordance to these terms, we've removed the blog and the URL is no
longer accessible
RSS Feeds - Hub Feeds Are Quality, Blog Feeds Are Less Valuable
Now remember that I participated in an experiment. Sunforged had examples of many blogs that helped other people generate traffic. Many examples had linked to the same source articles, even. By looking at these blogs, I could see that the posts were of good quality - with pictures etc and website addresses that had been integrated into Blogger. I am yet to learn how this can be done, so please forgive a lack of knowledge here.
When I was submitting my blogs to RSS feed sites, I noticed that the rankings for 'quality' were classified fairly low - ranked 2/10 (some were even rejected). I understand that blogs don't get the same level of authority as other article based content.
Now, from my understanding Google are attempting to make
their googlebots more natural to assimilate human behaviour - i.e. more intuitive. I
think the less quality an article/hub/blog is, the more likely Google would
consider it spam - especially snippets with links within them.
Going back the to 30 day part of the 60 day challenge, I remember that submitting quality RSS Feeds emanating from hubs were rated around 6 because our content was rich, diverse and varied within a category. We could get away with submitting rss feeds of the 60dc because good quality is always given the thumbs up.
Our blogs, however, are not good quality and I think with the contribution of submitting the low quality rss feeds, and the fact that Blogger is integrated with Google, it wouldn't be too hard to track back and make assumptions in concluding that my blog was spam. It is, I believe, the reason why this triggered my analytics, googlemail, blogger and adsense to be disabled.
Learn from this! Writers need to be whiter than white with good practice. Google's mayday changes have made the system more intuitive than before. Google are now hot on everyone's tail. Be warned that you can still be unlucky and have your accunt disabled for nothing - Google doesn't want to take any chances and do you blame them?
Google's Probability? Possibly on a High
Google Probabilities - Unnatural Behaviour
Remember that computers work on math, binary numbers and operate on the basis of the data placed within them. They work on probabilities. What would be the probability of links to the same source from many different people at the same time? This would create a very high probability of inappropriate activity. It would be deemed by Google as very unnatural!
Backlinks, in the eyes of Google, have
to be natural. It wouldn't be too hard to put two and two together and
calculate a reasonable assumption based on probability. This type of activity might flag a Google enquiry suggesting 'team backlinking activity' or 'unusual activity from individual user'. This alert, therefore, sets an automated disabling response.
For example: My account with the same links from a team member's blog account, followed by
displaying the same links that I have, multiply that by 5 from the 60dc team =
Google query. As a contributory factor, Google sees low quality RSS feeds and a sudden influx to various feed sites = Google query. Now what would
be the best way to automate scaremongering without the hassle of a human analysing the actions of a back-linker? Answer? By disabling all accounts associated with that
'so called' spammer.
Content Is King
This is what happened to me - and believe me, I am no spammer - and boy,
it was scary! It was a
punishment. Don't you think that highly qualified psychologists in
Google
would know this? This strategy is definitely the best way to warn
spammers off of unnatural activity. The think tanks at Google would
have this type of scenario covered. Again, who would blame them?
I have learned a great lesson from a big naive mistake and this has now formed the basis for my future good practice. You see, the lesson to learn here is that even with good intentions, situations can go pear-shaped! There is no blame.
All my objectives for the 60DC has been achieved. It is all good and a wiser shazwellyn comes forth. This experiment has been a complete success and I want to thank all the 60 day challengers for my learning. Not just for me, but you and everyone that reads this. You will learn that the best writers are those that produce great content - content is KING!
In The Eyes Of Google
- Self-promotion creates less "valuable" links in the eyes of Google.
-
Google's priority is to have best quality content.
- Page rank is
formulated naturally from natural backlinks.
- Behaviour is modified by
putting strategies in place to deter bad internet behaviour (i.e. disabling Google
accounts, causing stress to the user and, ultimately, deterring them - and
possibly their coherts - from behaving badly again).
- Using automated methods like the ones described means it minimises human resources and creates the desired effect on human behaviour. This is automated behaviour modification techniques at its best!
Don't believe me? Do you want more evidence? Well, check out these links. The first is a recent thread from the Hubpages forum that discusses certain issues pertaining to the ones I have covered here: What are the best ways to share your hubs on blogger?
The second link was sent to me whilst I was in the process of writing this article. Now, this is from a well recognised how to seo Guru named Grizz. I am no Guru, but I do have a firm understanding of psychology and I believe I have manage to transfer those skills to the Internet. It is interesting that he has come up with the same ideas as I, only his story involved the Blogger police! Again, let this be a lesson to all!
How to Make Money Online for Beginners
Since publication of this hub, Grizz's blog has been taken down, so you are unable to view it - apologies.
Now let me add something here. I want to highlight that:
- I did have my accounts reinstated after attempting to use three mobile phone numbers to do this.
- I did not reinstate my blogs after learning that they may have violated the terms of service - I don't want to take any chances.
- I have no association with Grizzly. His article just seemed to have parallels with my theory.
- This theory is based on my observations, assumptions and experience, entirely.
- The 60 day challengers have had no input in the production of this article and are in no way involved with it's publication. I value the whole team, especially the input and support of sunforged. We really had a special collaboration which will live with us all - congratulations to you all on a successful project!
Lesson's Learned, Content Is King and Thank You!
There are lessons to be learned from my experience. How to seo is not just about learning in a parrot fashion manner, but about intuition. Content is king. As time goes by, computer behaviour is becoming more intuitive because data input is created by humans for humans. The only way for Google to create a fair and even playing field, is for the types of strategies, as described, to be in place. Having adsense, googlemail, blogger and google analytics disabled caused the right response in me. I have learned my lesson and hopefully my lesson will become viral. Well done Sunforged for a great experiment and thank you for a wonderful experience.

Still interested in two important factors:
Did the blog marked as spam have any content? 1 post, 2 post etc? What are the factors that made up a flagged blog - how did this blog defer from the suggested makeup and process? ( 5-10) posts - rss feed etc. What elements were included, what elements were not.
And must point out that a google account disable is not related to a blog being marked as Spam - the blog filter is automated and is usually recanted the moment a human responds that they created it personally.
A google account disable in this case would come from an inability to answer security questions - in your case mobile number verification. Its a draconian measure often complained about in the googleforums, but it is also common across all web services
Those are very large missing pieces and would make the article helpful for those looking for reinstatement or curious as to why they have been flagged.
grizz is a great example of what to do, then what not to do,lol, but considering the profit level he reached..it was probably worth it in his case!
I'm not ready to move to this level yet but thanks for sharing your experience. When I do scale up I'll make sure the quality is in everything I do. Thanks again.
Amber:)
Hi Shaz, its interesting that 6 months into being on Hubpages and I am only just working out how to do all this "google seo" stuff. My interest is writing but you have helped me with knowing what not to do when dealing with analytics, etc. As usual, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I had to run away while I was writing the last post, but I had wanted to add how your naturally questioning mind is well matched to the online SEO world and I expect that soon you will be enlightening us on the best new tactics and methods.
As a team member your work was very powerful.! ;)
Hi Shaz,
That was alot of content!!
Honestly I am at a lost of what you are writing about.
Just a simple question. I have backlinked my hub site and hubs in my blog. And as you can see, I have also linked the blog in my hupages site. Is this against the "rules?" Should I take them out?
Thanks.
My adsense was disabled quickly and there is no way to get it back trust me. I have appealed and appealed and nothing. Don't worry concentrate on the other affiliate programs and forget about google...I still love google it is the search engine of search engines but don't ever put all your eggs and hard work into the google basket unless you know what you are doing. I didn't I was experimenting and they disabled me.
Great post I was riveted...Tammy
I woke this morning to find my AdSense account disabled, then lo and behold, this hub. Thanks for the encouragement.
I no longer feel alone! :-)
Shaz, I am sorry you had this experience. It seems like things fell apart when you really weren't trying to do anything wrong. I guess some lessons come hard. I haven't used blogs much so maybe that it good. Thanks for explaining all of this although I'm not sure I fully understand why you were punished. Thanks for sharing this experience.
Google has a system and it is carefully thought out, and impossible to cheat. Google likes natural links. Hub Pages now has Hub Karma. Check it out. It is all about natural linking to others. If you wanted to grow your Googleness, try simple things like "Link-Exchanges". You let another website put a link for you on their site, and you do the same for them. A kind of "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" type of routine.
I was fascinated by your adventures you have mentioned above. It can be usually undone if you contact Google and explain what you were doing and ask them to explain where - if at all - you went wrong. Someone may have "Flagged" you somewhere in the pipeline, perhaps. The companies Statcounter.com and SEOmoz and WEB CEO all have free analytics programs, and at a push, there are other blogs you can use too.
Using Stumble Upon and Digg are natural ways to boost your ranking too. I hope things get back to normal for you, and having "natural" links to your hubs and other online articles should serve you well.
Thanks for sharing this with us here, shazwellyn.
I disagree with cheekygirl about google having a system that is impossible to cheat. What if you schedule post in blogger ? that way you don't appear spammy. (I don't know how you got caught as spammer.Just wanted to ask you that did you posted all the 60dc summaries on blogs in day or within hour to trigger google's alarm ?maybe i'm not sure, but again is this fast you created blogs ?) Another point is google has bots to crawl website not humans to review content, and only backlinks and traffic decides content value. Why on earth any search engine visitor will click on google ads if he finds that content interesting. If content goes gibberish or boring for that visitor then and only then they move towards banner ads and there is no way google bot can decide "content as king" on their own.
@cheekygirl,stumbleupon and digg are natural ways of boosting ranking ? link-exchangers are google-safe ? lol.
Oh Sharon, you made me laughing and crying at the same time! I really feel for you going through such a trouble, but some of your conclusions are -umm - too far fetched :)
Lol, don't stop debating this is the way we learn things better.
:)
Just one question have you logged in from multiple google accounts from two or more browsers on same computer ? If so, then google will definitely scream for spam. Here is one more way anyone can reproduce this issue. Create orkut.com account with google id then login to orkut with two different browsers and on two different accounts, send few posts on orkut communities and google will scream with spam and malicious activity plus captcha message.
And about google algorithm, i think every natural way of linking can be cheated. it's easy to detect fraud clicks but hard to find out un-natural links if those links are not from google's server. One important thing is that if google starts to penalize people for un-natural linking then people can figure out how to do it and will dump their competitors(this possibility always exist, that's why it becomes easy to cheat most of google's updates on linking).
Thank you for the information. I thought about using blogs to advertise my pages, now i will think twice. :)
Good information from you , my friend. I learn much from this hub. I don't want it happen to me. I always pray and give the best I can for kindness. I vote this hub Up. Good work.
Prasetio
Thanks for the information. I don't really understand it all, but I've just recently started backlinking all of my hubs-each one to digg, delicious, blogger, stumbleupon, reddit, redgage, and tastespotting. Sounds like I should not do this?
Firstly Shazwellyn I am sorry to learn of all the hassles from Google and thank you for sharing them. this is a great help to everyone, I trust the house is back in order and you will grow in all facets as a result. I agree content is king.
Thank you. You are so very helpful. I've been trying to take more time to post better quality hubs and more tested recipes, and now I'm learning from you about SEO. I really appreciate the help because I need all I can get!
Wow some really helpful info here as a webmaster myself hubs like this really motivate me to do better and more. It would be muchly appreciated if you could leave a blog comment on my SEO website on any additional information you might have about the Google "mayday" update.
Thanx =)
the way you design your hub is so awesome, so much hard work there . Really loved it.
OMG !! Your title is full of Keywords, still its to over do!! but since this hubpages already become authority blogs, and already have own traffic, your hubs will be the no.1 even though I'll bet your 80% traffic is from hubpages rather than search engine lol :-)
I think you should explain about how to getting traffic from search engine shaz, BUY putting all keyword in the tittle Big lol :-)
shazwellyn, thanks so much for this very informative hub. A great service to Hubbers old, and new.
Cool hub.. will check your others :)
hey.. shazwellyn.
thanks for sharing your experience. the way you helping people is really nice.
Thank you for sharing your experiences!
Voted up! The last thing any of us wants is to lose our adsense accounts, and this cautionary tale will make many people think twice about their strategies.
thanks for the info. I think the original content is the key to a quality site and high rankings. if you have good valuable content as they said in field of dreams "people will come"
shazwellyn - Absolutely content is king. Now i am thinking about who is queen? No doubt backlink is queen:)
shaz-- that is something to think about, but I'd also add that a blog which is a team blog is also looked on harsher than a personal blog which has been around for a while. That being said, content content content content, the more content the better the content, the less problems.
Well, I have been against the kind of stuff SF promotes all along and while I am unhappy that you got hurt by it, it should be a cautionary tale.
Google gives the best advice:
"Before making any single decision, you should ask yourself the question: Is this going to be beneficial for my page's visitors?"
Play games with Google and sooner or later you'll get slapped. It's that simple.
I suppose SF will have some choice names for me as usual, but I'm only stating reality.
Shazwellyn--I have several blogger blogs that link to articles, and only had trouble with google closing one that just linked to ebay only.
I am not really sure that I completely understand what you did to get things shut down or if I am sure that your conclusions make sense to me.
I will say that I have blog rss feeds that I use for a lot of different situations that have never been a problem for Google or any other site, so I don't think that you can just say that blog feeds are bad or less valuable. I believe that it would depend on what the feed is feeding.
However, I am sorry that you had to go through this experience because I am sure that it was panic stricken.
I agree with you that Sunforged has been a leader on Hubpages and very encouraging to anyone who is trying to succeed.
Well, no, there's no reconciling of our views. I don't believe in trying to play games with Google. It's dangerous (as you have seen) and I think it's distasteful. I don't buy any of the arguments as to why it's OK. So, our philosophies are entirely opposed.
Good luck to you - I hope you will forever remain in Google's good graces.
You have a completely wrong read on me. I have no interest in trying to beat the system and I consider all such efforts as vaguely immoral. Trust me, we are not at all alike.
I make good money without games. SF has his opinions on why that is true (the dinosaur theory) and I have mine. But even if I were only making coffee money, I would still be uninterested in games and deception.
I dabbled there once. I felt cheap and dirty and quit almost immediately. It is not for me.
You are certainly correct - the methods of SF's challenges seem to fly in the face of the advice HP gives on their Learning Center pages.
However, they may feel (incorrectly, in my view) that there is no conflict at all.
Why don't you ask them? They may have a rational explanation or reconciliation.
Hi Shaz, Congrats this hub is on the front page this morning. And it looks like it will answer some questions that I was having. Thanks for sharing your experience. It looks like you have gotten stronger in your knowledge of SEO. Bookmarking so that I can study a little more. Again, Congrats on hitting the front page. :)
Hey there Shazwellyn
Great hub!! I learnt a lot from this. Was long overdue. Am just about learning SEO skills yet. This helped!! Thanks tonnes!
now i know why my google adsense has been disable...
I read your whole hub and didn't understand one word of it. I'm just dumb when it comes to this stuff. I have been trying to understand it but I don't seem to be getting any closer.
Lot of content..shazwellyn you write exceptionally well.. one of my webpage launched recently has made a sale of $1500 in just 40 days. The whole website has just 5 pages and the page which made me $40 in adsense and $1500 in sales have only around 9 lines of content..! What do you say for that..?
One of the biggest problem in Internet marketing is "information overloaded" and people do not know what to do..! People do the basics wrong and end up getting no result... It took around 4 years to find what is the actual mistake which I made in-spite of me being a web developer myself..!
Good content actually helps in SEO process. I am in the process of doing SEO myself. This is a tiring and tedious process to get more articles and submitting to high PR directory with do follow links.
Scary! I rely on my google accounts for so much, I would't take the risk of getting them suspended. I'll stick to the natural route to try and get backlinks.

I didn't feel I was personally up to the 60 day challenge but I have read the comments of those who did participate with great interest. The circumstances you described would certainly be cause for concern (or panic).
As you suggest, I have tried to always make content come first while not ignoring the other principles. If an article or blog or hub has nothing to say or offer but gets noticed throug skillful SEO, I'm not sure what has actually been accomplished. I am an expert at nothing related to SEO or making money online, but I've been trying to slowly find my way.
Thank you for sharing your experience and your wisdom with us. We appreciate the love you spread.
