Sunday was Ollie's day off, but today was different....
Ollie is a big red bus, and he lives with all the other buses in a big garage near the middle of the town.
One Sunday morning when Ollie and his friend Bertie was standing in the big garage, and talking about the people that had travelled on them over the past week, when Fred the driver and Bill the conductor came in.
Now Sunday was Ollies day off, and most of the big red buses stayed in the garage, because the offices and shops in the town were closed. But today was different.
Fred got into Ollies driving seat and started the engine. Bill went upstairs and stood by Ollies big front windows, but instead of ringing the bell as he usually did, he stamped his foot on the floor.
Ollie at the Train Station
Ollie found himself at the train station
"Something different today, Ollie," said Bill, "we are going to try out a new route." Fred turned Ollies wheel, and off they went into a part of the town that Ollie hadn't been to before. Round the streets they went, passed the factory where all through the week people went to make things. Passed the big shop where people bought things, and passed the big park, where the children play on swings and round-a-bouts. Ollie hoped that Fred knew where they were going, because he didn't want to get lost, and not see his friend Bertie any more.
As Ollie turned a corner, he found himself at the train station. All the trains were lined up in neat rows, like soldiers on parade.
"Hello," said Ollie, to a long train that stood near him, "what's your name?" "Charles," said the train, it's round bumpers wrinkling up at Ollie.
I'm a fast train with lots of first class carriages... ner ner ner ner nerrrrrrrrr!
"I'm a fast train with lots of first class carriages, and travel all the way to London every day." "Oh!" said Ollie, "well I'm a big red bus and take the towns people to work and school every day." "Is that all," said Charles as he stuck his nose in the air, and jiggled his coaches in a very haughty manner. Just then the trains' guard blew his whistle, and with a little shiver Charles pulled out of the station.
"I don't care," thought Ollie, "you can only go where the lines take you, but i can go where ever i like." Just then Fred and Bill came back, and it was not long before they were on their way through town, stopping now and then when Bill stamped his foot, and out into the green countryside, where cows and horses nodded their good mornings to Ollie, as he sped passed.
Through the lanes and villages they went, until they came to a lane with a railway bridge over it. Fred drove very slowly under the bridge, and just as they got half way, Charles the high class train stopped on top.
He's Stuck!
Rip, went Ollie's roof, and scrape went his paint. "Oh dear," said Bill, "oh dear," said Fred, as they ran to the front of Ollie, looking up to where Ollie's roof was now firmly stuck under the bridge.
The farmer came from his field and said, "he's stuck!" The vicar came from out of his church, and said, "he's stuck!" The old lady who worked in the village sweet shop came out, and said, "he's stuck!" and even the cows looking over the hedge mooed "he's stuck!" And it was true. No matter what Ollie did, going forwards or backwards, sideways or crossways, he could not get out.
Ollie looked so funny, his bonnet poking out from one side of the bridge, and his rear from out of the other side.
The farmer laughed. The vicar laughed. The old lady laughed. And even the cows looking over the hedge mooed with laughter. But Ollie didn't laugh-he felt silly, and Charles the train was looking down from the top of the bridge, with a scornful and snooty look on his windows.
When the signal on the railway changed, from red to green, Charles rolled over the bridge, his wheels making a clickety-clack sound, as he disappeared along the long lines towards the railway station.
"I know what we can do," said Bill, bending over one of Ollie's wheels, "so do i," said Fred, as he bent over another. Hiss hiss went the tyres. Creak creak went Ollie's roof, and in no time at all, Ollie rolled out from under the bridge.
Ollie trundled back towards the garage, passed the fields where the cows munched the green grass, through the villages where people waved, and along the road towards the station.
As Ollie drove along the road that ran by the railway line, he saw Charles standing with lots of his passengers walking along the road. "Please take us to the station, Ollie," they cried, "the train is broken and has left us to walk."
Ollie was proud, as Bill helped the people into his big seats, and Charles did not look as stuck-up as he did before.
When Ollie arrived back at the garage, Sam the cleaner looked at Ollie's scratched red paint, "oh not so bad," he said as he gave Ollie a wash with the hose pipe. And the repair man sprayed bright new red paint on Ollie's roof, and do you know that when it was finished, Ollie looked the brightest, and best bus in the whole garage.
