British Politics, Why A Coalition Between Nick Clegg And David Cameron Is A Good Thing

This is a very exciting time in British politics. I am proud to see a coalition government - the first in 60 years for the UK. The people have voted with a majority to David Cameron and the Conservative party. This majority was not enough to form a strong government though. As a result this empowered Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrat party, with their minority vote, to be in the powerful position of choice. By joining either political party - labour or conservative - they could potentially place either party in government. Who would Nick Clegg choose? Labour or Conservative? This situation was unique. Where else would you find the losing party be in such a powerful position?  This is British politics at its best!

Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats and now our deputy Prime Minister, advocated during the election campaign that should a potential coalition government occur, then he would side with the party with the majority vote. This was putting the national interest as the primary focus, before his own party.

He put his money where his mouth was. He and his team negotiated with David Cameron of the Conservative party and spoke with Gordon Brown, the existing Prime Minister at the time, of the Labour party. The Lib-Dem party, who came in as third place in the elections, was now in pole position. This was a chance for Clegg to inspire real political change. With the positive and progressive attitude of David Cameron, a compromise was reached as a way for both parties to work in partnership for the common good - the people for which they serve.

It is now that you will be able to see the Liberal Democrat's symbol - the bird of peace - nesting in the tree of the Conservatives. It is how things should be at this time in history, despite the cynics.

Whilst the media and the people were in a panic as to the potential coalition government, I was actually hoping for this. It was almost predictable. Why?

Just as David Cameron's Conservative tree flourishes, so is there a time for recession and stagnation. This inactivity often comes after a time of great growth and recession.

This sounds like what is happening in the world at the moment, doesn't it? Therefore, it comes as no surprise that as the natural part of life, when considering indecision, that the people of the UK could not make a concerted decision whilst voting for our Government.

Have you noticed similar patterns with other situations, not only on personal levels, but on economic and political levels? Again, this is the natural course of patterns that are happening in the world dynamics.

When there is a time of indecision, we often look to others to help us through. They may give us a different point of view and, if you are open to this (as it appears that David Cameron and Nick Clegg are), working as a team might just force political dynamics from inaction to action.

The bird of peace and freedom, therefore, can be the eyes of the world and the calming force that could provide the right conditions for growth. It is like Nick Clegg is the peacemaker and David Cameron is the strength - quite appropriate for their symbols that they represent, don't you think?

British politics is feeling the wind of change breezing through the wings and leaves of Clegg and Cameron. This is a unique situation for unique times and it is now that we should all be thinking in terms of working toward one world - for the better good or in the case of politics of today, the National interest.

We have been very fortunate in this alliance. Both David Cameron and Nick Clegg have social intelligence. David, particularly, has a great sense of humour, charm and carisma. Nick is a great public speaker, as demonstrated in the television election debates. More importantly, however, both Clegg and Cameron are from a new generation of children. They were born from the parent's of the sixties, seen the doom of the late 70's and lived through the changes of the 80's.

British politics during this time had grown and become more people focused. A realisation that partnerships in health and social welfare services, for example, can be powerful in the public and private sectors. Patients and users of care services benefit as competitive services provide their best service, cheaply. This is about working toward the best interest of the patient and requires putting their personal differences aside.

The idea's from what we now know as the National Health Service Community Care Act 1990 has helped sawn the seed. It has helped shape and change attitudes. Younger politicians have learned that they can put differences behind them and to focus on the common good.

In this example, the ideas of client centred approach and internal markets in health and social welfare are the foundations to the philosophy of working in partnership. British politics has spawned a new generation of politicians.  Ones that grew up, witnessing the greed and power corrupt leaders of the past.  Both Nick Clegg and David Cameron are willing to go beyond personal ego and scribe their names in history.  They are from a pioneering generation and, like many of our generation, are prepared to focus on what is important.  Through negotiation, listening and respecting each other's views, I can see the future is hopeful like the Dove and strong like the oak.  Let us all take the view of working for the common good - united we stand, divided we fall!
