Aspergers: Autism Spectrum Disorder - Asperger’s Syndrome: Why A Specialist College Education Is Best
70Young Person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder? Why Win the Right for An Asperger’s Syndrome College Education
The system in the UK can feel impenetrable when it comes to fighting to gain your rights when you have a special need. This is especially the case when it comes to young people with autism spectrum disorder. They have a right to a decent college education too. Unfortunately, people with Asperger’s syndrome are not mainstreamers, although the system would like us to think in terms of ‘normalisation’, autistic young people need a college education that is tailor made to their needs. This is an article in a set of three. These hope to help you through the devastating and stressful process of why, how and what to do in winning the right for an Asperger’s syndrome young person into a specialist college education establishment. How am I qualified to do this? Because I have been through the process!

Autism Therapy Tailor-Made To Individual Need
Autism therapy comes in many guises. Some ASD young people have dysphasia, dyspraxia, dyslexia and/or a combination of variants of these factors. These conditions come under the umbrella of autistic spectrum disorders and are very individual. This is why autism therapy has to be tailor-made to suit the individual need, which is very unique to each individual.
Asperger’s syndrome is associated with a lack of social understanding, empathy and obsessional behaviours, amongst many other misunderstandings and social problems. For an example of how this affects the individual, and for those who care for them, please take a look at the following article: Asperger’s Syndrome is for life not just for Christmas. This should give you a snap shot of real day-to-day life experience when living with this condition.

Women & Girls - Undiagnosed And ASD
Women and Girls are more difficult to diagnose than their male counterparts. They may be misdiagnosed or labelled neurotic when they are simply someone with Asperger's Syndrome. You can learn more about this in these two aricles:

Education : The System Fails People With Autism
Asperger’s syndrome is a complex hidden disability, exasperated by the addition of individual personality and gender. Women and girls, for example, are more difficult to diagnose than their male counterparts. For this reason many people who are classified under the autistic spectrum do not fit into mainstream education. These ‘enigma’ types need educating in a different way to conventional people. This is because of their social problems.
The system seems to fail them in mainstream, as teachers cannot be all things to all people. They are taught in a standardised way to teach standardised people in a standardised manner. It isn’t very reasonable to expect any more from our mainstream teachers. This is why it is important to obtain a diagnosis. Without this, many undiagnosed ASD people are lost in life. They could end up in prison, drugs or like Einstein. Yes, extreme in outcome, but very possible!

People with Asperger's Syndrome And Criminal Behaviour
- People with Asperger's Syndrome are more likely to be detained in prison than any other group of people
'The importance of considering anti social behaviour among people with autism-spectrum disorders is apparent from the significantnumber of case reports and case series describing criminal behaviour of people with a diagnosis of Asperger syndrome....a small yet significant number of offenders with autism who engage in illegal behaviour find themselves socially excluded or detained in secure provisions for prolonged periods. This article gives an overview of the scant empirical evidence relating to criminality within the context of Asperger syndrome'

'It's a familiar joke in the industry that many of the hardcore programmers
in IT strongholds like Intel, Adobe, and Silicon Graphics... are residing somewhere in Asperger's domain. Kathryn Stewart,
director of the Orion Academy, a high school for high-functioning kids
in Moraga, California, calls Asperger's syndrome "the engineers' disorder." Wired Magazine 'The Geek Syndrome' - see resource box
- Bill Gates (Microsoft Founder) seems to have lots of reference to Asperger's Syndrome in the media!
Bill Gates - Aspie Genius
The Genius of Asperger's Syndrome - Sillican Valley Should Be Renamed Aspie's Road!
There are more and more people with Asperger's Syndrome who are attracted and best suited to technological professions in the realms of Sillicon Valley in the USA. This area is the hub of all things computers where the likes of Microsoft reside. The area actually rewards and favors those individuals who show exceptional talents in math and technology. In fact, the condition is so widespread within this area, they should rename it Aspie's Road! This is the genius of Asperger's Syndrome!
Whatever the effect, as a society, we all need to help people with Asperger’s individuality in a very unique and individual way. This is why specialist college education has to be paramount for these lost people. Investment, whether to help them avoid the pitfalls of criminal activity and/or encourage the genius of Asperger's syndrome, therefore is fundamentally important.

Why A Specialist College Education For People With Autism Spectrum Disorder - To Conclude
A specialist college education for people with Autistic spectrum disorder is essential. People with Asperger’s syndrome need to have individualised learning to cater for their individual needs. This, of course, is true for everyone. However conventional people can be satisfied in a mainstream environment because they don’t have the same social difficulties and perspectives compared to Aspies. Unfortunately, because those with ASD are social misfits, they need to learn consciously independence, empathy and how the ‘normal’ world works. Our society has lots of emphasis on social intelligence and it is this that is missing for those with autism. This is all well and good, but how can we advocate and obtain a college education especially designed with Asperger’s young people in mind? Well, this is another fight that you will be able to read as part of this series. Take a look at the link at the bottom of this article for more.

You've really been able to put a lot of information about Aspergers out there. Always very helpful!
Shaz your mission to educate on Aspergers Syndrome comes from the heart and it shows through with your own experience with Dan - it pains me to read how an already difficult situation is borne out of government neglect reinforced by public ignorance which of course is fed by government neglect. The gross misunderstanding is spelled by the criminal charges etc. Thank you for sharing more on Autism spectrum disorder - and the positive aspects are outstanding.
I do aggree with you that the educational System fails people who have Aspergers Syndrome. This is unfortuanely true in every country.
It is hard enough living in this world with the condition without having the stress and worry of school to deal with. I should know I have aspergers and went through it years ago.
This is such good information, I can't imagine the hardship involved in dealing with these sorts of issues.
Great Hub! Thanks
Excellent hub about an important topic. Thank you. I'm sharing on FB.
Fantastic Hub. Couldn't agree with you more about services here in America. They need improvement. Thanks for sharing.
